  • 2022: A Spark of Hope (1:30–1:45)
  • In 2022, US President Joe Biden’s administration canceled part of the student debt. It sparked a backlash because the 10,000 USD amount was considered “a patronisingly small amount”. Still, a lot of people were questioning where the money would come from. Apparently, it did not have to come from anywhere: student debt was already part of the national debt, and cancelling it was not exactly a matter of cost as it is a matter of accounting.

  • Kitchen Table Debates (1:45–2:00)
  • Wait, they canjust do that?
  • In the US, they just cancelled billions in loans.People are saying it’s too expensive.
  • The question of what governments can or can’t ‘afford’, as journalist Indigo Olivier wrote, is not a matter of economics, but a political question. It is always about priorities. About what we as a society choose to value.

  • Defence Spending
  • With the average UK graduate having over £45,000 of student debt, redirecting just a slice of corporate subsidies or tax breaks to billionaires and large corporations would mean that cancelling debt would not need to cost the public anything. The problem isn’t lack of money. It’s how we choose to spend it.

  • Maybe I could finally just focus on what I want to do, not what I can afford to pay back.
  • If what governments want is to improve economic growth, they should invest in individuals, not corporations. Because billionaires hoard, while working people spend.

  • Question the system, don’t just restart it.
  • However, debt cancellation alone will not fix the system. The same problems will come back as long as we don’t challenge how education is funded. We need to rethink our priorities on education and really ask ourselves, what is it do we really value?

  • Reimagining the Future(2:55–3:00)
  • Public Education for All
  • And if we finally decided that we value education as a right, and not a commodity we should ensure that it will open doors, not close them with debt. The UK should move toward a more just system where education is a public good that we all invest in and benefit from. Toward a future where knowledge is shared, not sold.

  • Expensive for whom? The government acts like helping students is a burden, but giving tax breaks to corporations isn’t.
  • Debt cancellation isn’t just about money. It’s also about freedom. To thrive in life without a financial chain holding you back.
  • 1
  • It’s not about "can we afford it?"
  • But about "can we afford not to?"
  • $10,000 Student Debt Cancellation.
