  • This is the scene the day before Daisy Buchanan's wedding, where Jordan finds her very drunk and distraught over a letter she had found. The characters in this scene are Daisy Buchanan and Jordan Baker. The motif this scene is related to is drinking and alcoholism. "'Gratulate me," she muttered. "never had a drink before, but oh how I do enjoy it."" (Fitzgerald, 76). "She began to cry–she cried and cried. I rushed out and found her mother's maid, and we locked the door and got her into a cold bath. She wouldn't let go of the letter. She took it into the tub with her and squeezed it up into a wet ball, and only let me leave it in the soap-dish when she saw that it was coming to pieces like snow" (Fitzgerald, 76). These two quotes support the motif of alcoholism and drinking because they detail how Daisy decides to drink as a response to finding the letter that made her so distraught. It shows how much alcoholism is normalized in this community, and she also says that she's never had a drink before, so the fact that that is what she turns to when she is inconsolable tells us a lot about the environment she is living in.

  • We have already heard a lot about alcoholism and drinking as a social activity in this book. It has appeared in every chapter and is quite normalized as an everyday event in this community. Daisy turns to alcohol when she is devastated, she also mentions how she never drinks but this is the one time she chooses to do so. This may give us a hint at how alcohol is perceived by the people in this community, and the reputation of making social events more fun or even relieving pain (as Daisy is doing). We hadn't encountered someone drinking because of a painful moment in their lives before in this book, it is usually an activity one chooses to do when they are in good spirits with their friends. This also provokes the question: What is going on behind the scenes in the Buchanans' lives? Putting aside the alcoholism aspect of this scene, the reason Daisy is so distraught is because of a letter she found. This also brings us to the motif of secrecy. She doesn't let anyone read it or see it, even in her drunken state, which shows us that she is so accustomed to lying and keeping secrets that she pays attention to it even when she is barely coherent.
