The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Mankind is its on worse enemy
One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Sterling is that Mankind is its own worse enemy. One example that supports this theme is when Les Goodman is surrounded by everyone because they think he is the monster for his car randomly starting on its own. This shows that the moment something strange happened, people were quick to assume and accuse someone which led to more conflicts(pg. 76). Another example is when Charlie shot Pete Van Horn thinking he was the monster. This supports my theme because Charlie was so fearful of the monsters and paranoid he felt the need to "protect" himself but ended up shooting one of his neighbors(pg.79). The last example is when everyone on Maple Street started going crazy once Pete Van Horn was shot and accusing one another. This supports the theme because when Charlie killed Pete Van horn, everyone panicked and chaos erupted. People started to accuse Charlie and anyone who didn't seem "Normal". People started grabbing weapons to attack each other and became violent(pg.83).These are the reasons why I think the best theme for The Monsters are due on Maple Street is Mankind is its own worse enemy.
