- After he finished a book burning with his fellow firemen, Guy Montag walked home and met Clarisse McClellan. Clarisse ended up completely changing Montag's view of the world over the time they spent together, with the main plot starting with Clarisse asking Montag, "Are you happy?"
-  Montag and his unit go to burn a house harboring books. This job was different, however, as the owner of the house was still there when the firemen arrived. After all the books were gathered, the old woman was told to get out of the building so they could burn it down, but the woman took out a match and burned the house down herself. This made Montag start thinking about what is so good in books that people will die over them.
- Montag, after trying to understand multiple different books, went to go meet Faber, an old college professor he met once in the park. After talking about the importance of books in society, the two devise a plan to mass-produce books again.
- Montag's wife, Mildred, ended up turning Montag in for owning books. Captain Beatty, Montag's superior, had Montag burn every room in the house. After, Montag burned Beatty to death, and knocked the other firemen in the unit. Montag then fled the scene to avoid being arrested.
- After talking to Faber about what to do, Montag runs from society to try and find a hobo camp. The police send a mechanical hound after Montag to subdue the now-felon. Montag was able to escape the tracking machine in a river, avoiding death in the process, and allowing Montag to find the Hobo camp.
- Eventually, Montag found the hobo camp and is greeted by Granger. Granger and the "Book People" explain that each of them is responsible for memorizing the entirety of one book, and that their job is to keep information to pass it down to younger generations. Montag joins the group, and becomes the backup "book" for the "Book of Ecclesiastes," an old biblical story.
