  • Let's talk about the cognitive psychology theorists now, Nancy. Ulric Neisser is known as the founding father of cognitive psychology. He wrote that a person's mental processes could be measured and analyzed. Through his experiments, he discovered that it is easier for people to remember an experience when tehy actually experience it rather than only hearing it.
  • Cognitive psychology? Hm, okay. I remember! Jean Piaget proposed that children are not less intelligent than adults, but they just think differently. He believed that children go through four stages of cognitive development: sensorimotor stage, preoperational stage, concrete operational stage and formal operational stage.

  • Good job! George Miller is another major theorist and founder of this field. He recognized that the human mind could be understood through an information-processing model.
  • Thanks, Michael. Lev Vygotsky is another theorist that I'd like to talk about. He discovered the sociocultural theory of cognitive development. It argues that social interaction and culture are fundamental to human cognitive development.

  • Those are some admirable persons. How do these perspectives explain learning, behaviour and mental processes, though?
  • Behaviourism explains learning and behaviour through conditioning. In this, humans respond to external stimuli through associations or a system of rewards and punishments. These are set up by social institutions such as family and mass media. On the other hand, cognitive psychology explains learning as the active processing of information. After interpreting information using mental frameworks, we make a decision.
  • Oh, thank you! This was a fun discussion.
