  • During pregnancy, the volume of blood increases and so does the required amount of iron intake. Therefore, I recommend increasing iron intake by taking dietary pills.
  • Instead of taking supplemets, I recommend having iron rich foods  because they can help minimize the risk of iron overdose and ensures a good intake of other nutrients found alongside iron.
  • But having iron based supplements are a better choice because they have a better effect in recovery and prevent other complications.
  • Iron supplements are also harmful in many ways. Overdose can cause serious liver problems, and other symptoms such as backache, muscle pain, numbness, nausea, diarrhea, vomitting, or constipation. Moreover, supplements contain non heme irons that are poorly absorbed, and harmful for the body. Whereas, foods have heme irons that are beneficial.
  • Accordingly, iron rich foods have less nutrition value in terms of iron deficit, and it is very hard to track the amount of iron taken as the amount of iron varies for each and every type of food which will later contribute to anemia, and cause such other medical problems. 
  • Moreover, dietary supplements are very expensive in terms of creating and buying them. The average cost of iron supplements in India is 5,500 rupees per 100 grams, which is expensive isn't it?
  • Even if dietary supplements and pills cost more, they are better as they are very effective, and there is a sense of satisfaction as we can easily determine the amount of iron going inside the body, and I can ensure that my patient will not suffer from anemia, as the success rates are better when taking pills.

  • According to me, Both foods and supplements should be taken in balance because high consumption of supplements can cause over dose, low dosage can cause a lack of iron. Accordingly, tracking the amount of iron is very hard in food, and foods can cause other medical issues. So, I propose taking iron supplements and foods, in a equal balance which will prevent anemia, and such other harmful medical problems.
