Siddhartha Gautama was born with the potential to be a great monarch or religious leader. His father desired that he become a monarch rather than a religious leader.

Siddhartha had a life of luxury as he grew up. His father tried to keep him from witnessing the world's genuine evils. He would constantly be escorted by a bodyguard. His father would clean the streets of the poor every time he went out.
He walks out one day without his guards and sees a sick man, an old man, a dead man, and a holy but impoverished man.
Siddhartha observed the impoverished holy man's contentment with nothing. As a result, he ran away from home and became a monk. He became a member of a group and stayed with them for five years.
Siddhartha was so unwell and deprived of the things he needed to survive that he passed out after five years. He accepted food and drink from a milkmaid when he awoke. He was then abandoned because he had given in to his desires and cravings.
When he realized that self-denial wasn't for him, he concentrated for 49 days under a tree till he came to a realization. He afterwards changed his name to Budda and preached his message and story till he died.
