Imagine there was a cave where there were people looking at shadows on a wall by which they gained all of their knowledge
Ok, Socrates
Socrates Narration: These prisoners, chained by their own human nature, were stuck viewing shadows on the wall of the cave that they were facing. They only knew what they saw on the wall, and derived all of their opinions and knowledge based upon that information.
These shadows represent the opinions fed to us to recipricate without question
The chains represent the limitations the prisoners put on themselves, like ignorance
The prisoners represent us; normal people
The fire represents the limiting factor from the prisoners learning more than they already know
The cave represents the world in which we live
Socrates: Now imagine one person break free from the chains that binds them and then looks up. His eyes would be singed by the light from the fire.
The stars and moon represent the beauty that humanity is missing
MY EYES!
The Sun represents the pinnacle and being of knowledge and truth
Socrates: Now imagine if a prisoner was able to actually make it to the surface. The sights and experiences he would gain, but his prisoner counterparts would not believe him and call him crazy, as it defies everything they believe to be true
I know everything now
This evidences that what we believe to be true sometimes differs from reality, and that blind ignorance holds us back from discovering the truth. There are many factors in our lives that can influence our perceptions and feed us misinformation. We must use intuition to combat these enemies of information
Wow! I never thought about it this way...
