- Brandon Jones is assigned an ancestry project in history class.
- Brandon and his friend discuss the project. He reveals that his mom's side of the family apparently has a curse, but he doesn't know much about it. He plans to do his project on this.
- Brandon tells his mother about the project. She decides to start telling him the full story of the family curse.
- Lawrence Clarke arrives in America in 1849 at age 16 from England. He has come for the Gold Rush and hopes to find fortune in America.
- While in a mine, Lawrence discovers a crystal. Brandon's mother tells him that the family believes this was a crystal from an ancient Native American tribe that was cursed.
- With doubt, Brandon questions his mother's story. He asks if that's what the family believes was the cause of the bad things that happened to his grandfather and his Uncle Ben. She tells him "Well, my father's family had misfortune from very early in his life."
