  • Elie is curious about his Jewish faith. He urges his father to teach him Jewish Mysticism. However, he declines, saying he is too young. Elie finds Moshe the Beadle who becomes his Rabbi (teacher).
  • Moshes Warning
  • "Jews, listen to me. It's all I ask of you. I don't want money or pity. Only listen to me,"
  • The Calm Before the Storm
  • The Hungarian government sent for all foreign Jews. They were deported to Nazi-held Poland. However, on the way, the SS murdered them. Moshe was able to escape and returned to Sighet to tell his story, but no one believed him.
  • "He's just trying to make us pity him. What an imagination he has!"
  • "Poor fellow. He's gone mad."
  • 1942-1943: Elie celebrated his Bar Mitzvah and continued to study the Bible and other Jewish Books.
  • Then Came the Ghettos
  • German Occupation
  • All Jews must register and wear the yellow star. Under new law, no Jew may own a business.
  • Jewish homes were raided and they were forced into the Ghettos.
  • Sighet becomes occupied. Jews were forced to wear stars. Soon, their businesses were shut down.
  • Transport to Auschwitz
  • Elie’s father learns that all the Jews will be transported to a concentration camp. They are expelled from the ghettos and forced onto cattle cars by the hundereds. Once at Auschwitz, Elie and his father lie in order to survive.
  • Life in the Camp
  • "For God's sake, where is God,"
  • For seven months, Elie and his father worked in the concentration camps of Auschwitz and Buna. There, they endured and witnessed heinous crimes against humanity.
  • Death March
  • Elie's foot became infected. In January, he undergoes an operation. With the Red Army advancing, the SS evacuated the camp and forced the prisoners on a 50 mile death march to Buchenwald. Of the 20,000 who left the camp, only 6,000 survived.
  • Shlomo Wiesel
  • January 29: Arrival to Buchenwald. Shlomo Wiesel died of dysentery, starvation, and exhaustion. Elie becomes guilt stricken over the feelings of relief and sadness he felt.
  • Liberation
  • Elie is liberated and sent to France where he spent time recovering from intestinal issues. “From the depths of the mirror, a corpse gazed back at me. The look in his eyes, as they stared into mine, has never left me.”
