Tim enters the war because of shame and soon learns that many men do brave things because of same and guilt. Tim is the narrator, protagonist, and author.He uses his story telling to cope with the memories and realities of war.

These distract him and later he burns them.His traits are; mature,responsible, and a poor leader. He carries the guilt for the platoon so they don't have to.He is a Christ like symbol. Not only does he have the initials but his last name is cross and he often carries the burden for all the men.
