He then has terrible nightmares about Dr Jekyll and goes next door to warn him when he sees Mr Hyde enter the Laboratory. He goes in to warn Dr Jekyll about Mr Hyde when he is told by the servant that Dr Jekyll said that Mr Hyde is now in charge. Utterson is worried that Mr Hyde will kill Dr Jekyll to benefit from the will.
He sits with Dr Jekyll and discusses about his will and how he leaves everything to Mr Hyde.
A year later, Hyde is seen by a maid brutally clubbing an old gentleman to death. The police find out that the old man had a letter addressed to Utterson and they contact him. Utterson shows the police Hyde's house and they find the murder weapon and signs of a hasty exit.
Utterson visits Dr Jekyll and he looks 'deadly sick'. Utterson asks Dr Jekyll if he is hiding Hyde and Jekyll replies by saying that he will never see or hear of Hyde again. He shows Utterson a letter from Hyde that indicates this.
The police cannot find Hyde and Jekyll seems happier as well. Afterwards, he seems depressed and will not see Utterson. Utterson visits Dr Lanyon to discuss about Jekyll but finds him on his death bed and hints that's he is the cause of his illness. Dr Lanyon gives Utterson a letter that is marked not to be opened until the death or disappearance of Dr Jekyll.
