- As a closeted lesbian, Astrid couldn't risk her parents finding out aboutIrene- she was far too important. As much as they would love to be aproud and out couple, if Astrid's family knew, she'd likely get sent toconversion therapy. Neither of them wanted to risk that. Once they graduated and moved out, they could do whatever they wanted. but in the meantime, they needed to be careful. They needed to be safe.
- The hours they managed to spend together were the happiest hours of both their lives. Whenever they could get together after school or on the weekends, theyworked on a bucket list of things they wanted to do together. Watch all the Harry Potter movies in one night, eat 12 donuts together, sew a pride flag, hike to a waterfall, and so on. They saw a future together, whether they remained a couple or not. They were best friends before anything else, and they promised it would stay that way forever.

- Astrid knew she wouldn't have another chance to see Irene, so she snuck out that night to say goodbye.
- You can't leave! We won't get to see each other again!
- I know, but I don't have a choice. I won't see you again, and I'm sorry, but I need you to move on. Don't spend every day thinking about me or grieving me. Just let go Irene, please. I'll be so much happier knowing you can move past it.
- Irene, if the stars were mine, we could stay here forever and we would never have to say goodbye. I'm sorry, but the stars aren't mine, as much as I wish they were.
