- The first step of meiosis is Prophase I. In a cell, the homologous chromosomes find each other. But in your case.. we'll have to use some bell peppers. Each bell pepper will function as a chromatid and we'll put four together to form a tetrad. We'll use mushrooms for your centioles, which are gonna move to opposite sides of you. Also, your yolk (nucleus) is going to start have its nuclear membrane break down. The homologous chromosomes are going to be crossing over. Sound good?
- Got it!!
- Next I'm going to need you to shift into Metaphase I. This should be an easy switch, because you just have to get the bell peppers (chromosomes) to the center of the cell (egg white). The homologous chromosomes will be side-by-side. Spindle fibers, orin your case, cheese will be added and it will connect to the centromeres, or middle of the bell peppers.
- I'm doing it!
- Anaphase I time! The cheese is going to do the work for this transition, because its going to pull the bell peppers to each side.
- This is too easy!
- Anaphase II is upon us!! The cheese is going to work again, and is going to pull the bell peppers apart, grab on to one half (sister chromatids), and pull to each side. This is our last stage having two copies of peppers in each cell, or being diploid.
- Doing well, almost there!
- WOW!!! I did it! Let's go serve these up ASAP!
- Here's the most exciting part! Telophase II and cytokinesis. We are going to be turning our 2 diploid eggs into 4 haploid eggs (sorry customer, you only get one pepper per egg). You just have to split each existing egg in half, and we'll be all set! These 4 eggs represent gametes, or sex cells.
