  • The surly sullen bell is rung at funerals the amount of years the person lived. This line is important because the speaker is giving a clue of what time period it is. The surly sullen bell doesn't occur in modern times.
  • Than you shall hear the surly sullen bell
  • ToneThe tone is sad and hopeless. It speaks of death and how there is nothing that can be done. There is no use in mourning because it won't bring them back. Continue to live your own life. It seems the speaker is telling this to their loved ones. Maybe the speaker doesn't want their death to be a sad occasion.
  • TurnThe turn of the poem is Line 6. Before this line, the poem is very depressing and hopeless. The speaker states for no one to mourn for them after their death. For their loved ones to continue their own life and not look back. After the turn, the poem speaks of love. The speakers loves their loved ones in return, but would rather be forgotten.
  • That I in your sweet thoughts would be forgot
  • This line means the speaker wants their loved ones to forgot about them after death. It's important because the speaker feels it will be easier for them to let them go and accept. Forgetting is a way to heal in the speaker's eyes.
  • Theme:The speaker urges their loved ones not to dwell on their death. They want their loved ones to move on with their lives and be happy. Acceptance of the situation is what the speaker wants. Doing the opposite will only bring agony. Letting go of a deceased loved one is hard. However, the speaker feels it's not impossible.
