  • British troops had been occupying Boston for several years...
  • We need to protect ourselves from the British.
  • Rebel leaders Samuel Adams and John Hancock were in the Massachusetts town of Lexington. 
  • Nearby, the town of Concord had a store of weapons and ammunition.
  • On April 19th, 1775, 900 British troops leave Boston in the night heading to Lexington and Concord to arrest the leaders and seize the weapons.
  • Boston's North Church hung two lanterns, communication that the British were going to attack by sea. Riders like Paul Revere and Samuel Prescott warned nearby towns in the countryside.
  • The regulars are out!
  • As hundreds of red coats walked into Lexington, the first advance alone outnumbered the 70 minute men.
  • While the two forces eyed each other, an unknown soldier fired a shot, starting a battle that the British would win.
  • As the British got to Concord, they fought minute men arriving from other towns, eventually losing the fight and retreating losing more men in the process.
  • The Battle of Lexington and Concord was the first conflict in the Revolutionary War, which the rebels would win, founding the United States.
