  • The Craftswoman
  • The Challenge
  • No.
  • Apologize!
  • Athena's Rage
  • Athena was a master artisan. As much as she was the woman counterpart of Ares as a war goddess, she was also the female equivalent of Hephaestus when it came to arts and crafts. Arachne, a mortal craftswoman, boasted that she was more skillful than Athena herself.
  • The Goddess' Mercy
  • Athena offered her a chance to repent, but after Arachne refused, she challenged her to a weaving duel.
  • The Devouring
  • Yum!
  • Athena fashioned a beautiful tapestry which illustrated the gruesome fate of the mortals who had the hubris of challenging the gods, while Arachne chose the stories of the mortals unjustly victimized by the gods. She didn’t even have a chance to finish it as Athena tore Arachne’s fabric to pieces and in despair, Arachne hanged herself.
  • But the goddess out of pity loosened the rope, which became a cobweb. Arachne herself was changed into a spider, whence the name of the zoological class to which spiders belong, Arachnida. As such, Arachne is doomed to weave ever since.
  • In order to forestall these dire consequences, he tricked her into turning herself into a fly and promptly swallowed her. He was too late however, for Metis was already pregnant with their first and only child, Athena.
