The story starts on a warm, sunny day in June in a small village. with green grass and flowers all over. People begin to gather in the square for a yearly ritual called a lottery. Children mingle before their parents arrive and talk about trivial matters such as farming and children. Other important figures such as Mr. Summers, the man in charge of conducting the lottery, and Mr. Graves, a postmaster, have also been introduced.

The initial incident happens when the lottery officially begins and the villagers start drawing slips of paper from the black box. This moment introduces the main conflict because the lottery is serious and dangerous, not just a harmless tradition. Tension starts to build as people act nervous and avoid looking at their papers, showing that something bad will happen to the person who is chosen.

The rising action happens as the villagers continue drawing names and the tension increases. When Bill Hutchinson is chosen, Tessie begins to protest and says the lottery is unfair. The lottery then continues with only the Hutchinson family, making the situation more intense and personal. As each family member draws again, the crowd grows quiet and nervous, showing that everyone understands the serious consequences of being selected.
