- Generational Difference is one of the themes in the story, and this was shown through the narrator and her mother, they had contrasting ideas about Flora's life and how it should be written. The mother represents the "Older Generation" and the narrator represents the "Newer Generation"
- The story showed the bitterness love can offer you. Flora loved Robert, but Robert and her sister Ellie betrayed her. In the end, her sisterly love for Ellie still prevailed, forgave her, and took care of her when she was sick. She did all these things like a martyr.
