- Andrea Yates a mother of 5 was struggling with her mental health and on July 17, 1999 she was hospitalized after a suicide attempt and diagnosed with a major depressive disorder. Yates suffered from severe postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis, and schizophrenia. It is said that around 40% of mothers suffer from postpartum depression, Andrea Yates being a serious case that led her to suffer a psychosis that produced hallucinations, delusions and feelings of worthlessness and inadequacy.

- On June 20, 2001 Andrea Yates drowned all five of her kids (John Samuel, Luke David, Mary Deborah, Noah Jacob, and Paul Abraham) one by one in the bathtub of her home in Texas. She started with John, Paul, and Luke, laid them in her bed and then drowned Mary.Her eldest, 7 year old Noah, came in and asked what was wrong with Mary and tried to escape after seeing all of his siblings dead but was chased down by his mother and drowned in the bathroom.
- Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity
- Right after the crime Andrea Yates called the police for an officer and would not state the reason, soon after she called Rusty her husband and told his to come home, the police entered the house and upon seeing the kids she was arrested.

- Andrea Yates was found Guilty at first and then later found Not Guilty by the reason of Insanity, she had a long history of mental illness that was ignored by many people around her. Her doctors had warned her to not have any more children as they saw her psychosis getting worse, which was ignored by her husband and he chose to isolate her in their home. Leaving her to herself knowing she suffered from depression, postpartum depression, and psychosis.
- Andrea Yates was originally sentenced life in prison after the jury found her Guilty of Capital Murder. Yates was granted a new trial by an appeals court due to the testimony of a prosecution medical expert. She escaped life behind bars but is spending the rest of her life in a mental institution.
- After her suicide attempt she was released and was still allowed custody of her 5 children. I agree with the decision of Not Guilty by the reason of insanity, i believe she was not aware of what she was doing at the time of the murders. Andrea Yates had her 5 kids during the first 8 years of her marriage and after each pregnancy, yates became more and more disociated with reality. She was left isolated by her own husband and felt detached from society, leading her into a frenzy.
