  • In the telegram Zimmerman, the cause was the anticipation of the resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare. There was an act that the German government thought would lead to war in the United States. This convinced Americans that Germany was hostile and intended to start a war. President Wilson cited the telegram, Germany's submarine attacks, and Germany's attempts to form an alliance with Mexico. Zimmerman hoped for tensions with Mexico.

  • The Telegram Zimmerman led to World War 1. This inflamed anti-German sentiment in the United States and helped convince Congress to declare war. It became the end of isolationism. It revealed Germany's plan to ally with Mexico and Japan of the United. Zimmerman was decoded by British intelligence, its contents were published and caused widespread anger among the American public toward Germany. This shifted the American sentiment against Germany, pushing the country to abandon neutrality and enter the war.
