- Beowulf goes on to present his achievements and his heroic characteristics.
- Hrothgar accepts
- He has "swam In the blackness of night, hunting monstersOut of the ocean"
- Out of respect for Hrothgar, Beowulf asks if he can defeat Grendel.
- Hrothgar accepts his offer to defeat Grendel. Partly because of Beowulf's father. Hrothgar realizes that a lot of his men will die and they decide to make a toast to celebrate the defeating of Grendel.
