- Miep, Victor, Johannes, and Bep spent the rest of their break talking together and spending time with each other. They reflected on how they each felt awful for the hiders through their difficult situation.
- Yes, I agree with you, Victor. It hurts me to see the Jews treated so unfairly for no reason.
- Everything must be so difficult for those poor hiders...I feel so bad for them. What did the Jews do to deserve this?
- In their hearts, however, the characters knew they were doing the right thing by helping the Jews hide.

- However, Willem van Maaren often spent his breaks alone. He strongly resented that the other annex workers helped Jews hide. Willem often acted strange because of this, leading to him becoming isolated from the others.
- How dare they help those Jews hide?! This cannot be allowed. I must do something about this, it is illegal to help Jews hide. They will not get away with this...

- Because of WIllem's absence and extremely unusual behavior, the other annex workers grew suspicious of him. They recognized that Willem barely spoke to them, usually was not present, and looked at them suspiciously when they brought up the hiders.
- You are right, Miep. Willem has definitely been acting strange. He seems uncomfortable whenever we bring up the hiders. I wonder if he does not like that we are hiding Jews...
- Have any of you seen Willem recently? He barely speaks with us and is missing when we are together. He is beginning to act strange...
