- Jem and Scout have arrived to school. Thisis Scout's first time back and she is very excited. Jem tells Scout that he does not want her hangingout with her becausehe thinks that she will embarrasshim.
- "...I was not to approach him with requests to enact a chapter of Tarzan and Ant Man,to embarrass him with references to his private life." (Lee, 20)
- "Your father does not know how to teach. You can have a seat now." (Lee,23)
- This is where Scout and her teacher Miss Caroline get into a little argumentabout who taught Scout how to read. Miss Caroline gets offended becauseshe is the one who is supposed to teach them how to read.
- "Ma'am?" (Lee, 23)
- Scout is trying to tell Miss Caroline that Walter's family is poor and that he can barely feed himself
- "Did you forget it this morning." (Lee, 25)
- "Yeb'm" (Lee,25)
- "Walter's one of the Cunnighams, Miss Caroline." (Lee, 26)
- "Are we as poor as the Cunninghams?" (Lee, 27)
- (Flashback)Atticus and Scout discussthat they are poor, but the Cunninghams are even more poor.
- "Not exactly. The Cunninghams are country folks, farmers, and the crash hit them hardest." (Lee, 27)
- "Jean Louise, I've had about enough of you this morning." (Lee, 28)
- At this point, Miss Caroline is very mad and upset that Scout is trying to help out Walter. Scout is confused to why she is getting upset.
- This is where Miss Blount comes into the classroom to yell at everyone that they are too noisy and to quiet them down.
- "If I hear another sound from this room I'll burn up everybody in it.." (Lee, 29)
