Meet Rowan
Only a certain amount of trainees can become official Scythes, and after a series of tests and challenges, the elder Scythes choosing the new decide that among the apprentices, Citra is with them.

Scythe Faraday basically just did not show up after a gleaning...they did not hear that he had self-gleaned until a bit later.

What
Rowan is late to school, and in the office is Scythe Faraday. Faraday is there to glean one of the football players, and Rowan stays with him and comforts him as he does not have anyone with him.

The test turned out to be whether Citra would be overly curious, and is told to put on his ring. Citra does, and it is so cold it nearly burns her finger.
Their first day of training is complete, and Citra is told to bring Faraday some milk. She suspects this is some kind of test..because that's just what he does but she doesn't know what the test really is.
