At the start of scene i, King Lear who is the leader of Britain decides to divide his country into 3, one 3rd for each daughter. For each daughter to receive their piece of land they must confess and express their love for their father.
However, his youngest daughter, Cordelia, who is supposed to receive the largest piece of the kingdom, when it is her turn to express her love to her father, Cordelia replies with, "Nothing, my lord"(I.i.89). Her response doesn't sit well with lear and he disowns her and disinherits her.
Once everyone has left, Goneril and Regan discuss everything that just conspired. They are afraid that they might suffer from their father's irrationality just like Cordelia. They decide to work together and take turns in helping Lear with his 100 knights.
"You see how full of changes his age is. The observation we have made of it hath not been little"(I.i.290-291).
Edmund, who is Gloucester's illegitimate son, reveals he has a forged letter that is supposed to be from Edgar, his half-brother to Gloucester their father. Edmund is using this letter to pin Gloucester and Edgar against each other Edmund can win over his fathers affecttion.
"I beseech you, sir, pardon me. It is a letter from my brother that i have not all o'er-read; and for so much as I have perused, I find it not fit for your o'erlooking"(I.ii.36-39)
Edgar then enters the room after Gloucester has left. Edmund starts stirring the pot and is trying to convince Edgar that their father is angry with him and that Edgar should leave and go into hiding.
"I pray you have a continent forbearance till the speed of his rage goes slower; and, as I say, retire with me to my lodging, from whence I will fitly bring you to hear my lord speak. Pray ye, go! There's my key. If you stir abroad, go armed"(I.ii.164-168)
In scene iii, Goneril is with Oswald who is her steward. She is expressing her struggles with playing host to Lear and his knights, even though she wants to get rid of Lear. She asks Oswald to annoy Lear so that she will get a reaction and be able to get rid of him.
