  • I don't remember where I first heard the term 'anthropology.' It was most likely something I ended up stumbling upon when researching degrees and higher education in high school.
  • I've had a long and enduring background in history, social science, and English subjects from a young age. Having an education that was inclusive of multiple perspectives of people is one of my great values. I took a genocide/holocaust history class early in high school that really emphasized how damaging it is to erase and reduce individuals of a group in society. These principles lead me to research.. therefore, I already had a decent idea of the field prior to this enrollment.

  • UC Berkeley Definition: Anthropologists study human beings from every time period, in every way possible, and in all their complexity.
  • For a long time, I had no idea what to study - I valued all the subjects in the arts and sciences. I wanted something that would always allow me to keep learning, and stay in touch with multiple disciplines. My idea of anthropology was largely academia focused (conducting research at schools), because of how I personally envisioned my future. I also thought that it would also give me enough space to specialize in a specific thing.

  • I was already aware that it was broad discipline. I was pleasantly surprised to learn how many fields one has access to depending on which sector they decide to pursue. I enjoy its inclusivity of topics and having that initial breadth of subjects is important to someone like me. It goes to show just how complex us humans are, and there is always something to learn. There are so many places to apply the knowledge and skills one gains from studying it.
