- In 1835. Charles Darwin, age 22 visited the Galapagos as an an newbie naturalist on a ship named HMS Beagle.
- Charles Robert Darwin has been given credit for founding the foundation of modern evolutionary science and was born February 12, 1809. Coming from ancestors which were scientists, he tried to pursue a career as a doctor but became a naturalist as the sight of blood made him sick.He used non-religious biology to theorise evolution by natural selection.
- Charles Darwin had theorised natural evolution because of the number of different species he had encountered. His study of the birds in the Galapagos proved him right as the shape of the finches' beaks varied depending on which island they went on and what food source the island provided.
- The theory is sometimes described as survival of the fittest
- The theory of evolution by natural selection was explained by Charles Darwin in 1859. He said over generations physical traits and behaviours would be passed down to offspring, individuals with more chance of survival in their environment reproducing offspring with their traits.
- He wrote a book, stripped of academic references and aimed at the reading public, called On the Origin of Species
- ‘Darwinism’ is customarily used to refer to all theories of evolution after Darwin whenever they focus on the principle of natural selection
- In 1877, Cambridge bestowed Darwin with an honorary doctorate of law
- After a heart attack on Christmas, followed by seizures, Charles Darwin dies, in great suffering, at Down House. He is later buried in Westminster Abbey.
