- Join the Crusaders! Your sins will be forgiven if you do this!
- There was once a vast crowd of people singing hymns and calling others to join them to free Jerusalem. Thanks to Peter the Hermit's words, many other former farmers decided to follow him. This group was known as the Crusaders.
- Soldiers of Christ! We need to free the Holy Land from the Turks!
- Pope Urban II called for a crusade to free the Holy Land in 1095. People replied his call enthusiastically with Deus le veult! That means God wills it!
- The first crusade was a military success. They had an advantage where they took the Muslim kingdoms by surprise. Turns out the Muslim kingdoms were too separated to resist. The crusaders captured Jerusalem and created four crusader states in 1099.
- Victory! We freed the Holy Land!
- Muslims took Edessa in 1144. This alarmed Europeans so much that the pope called for another crusade. The Second Crusade had leaders who argued and crusaders that treated the Muslim majority of Palestine with disrespect and cruelty. Therefore, the Second Crusade failed. Later, in 1187, Saladin, a Muslim leader, grew stronger. He recaptured Jerusalem.

- How about we sign a truce to end this Crusade? But if we do, Jerusalem will still be ours.
- The Third Crusade happened due to the fall of Jerusalem. It began in 1189 and it was also known as the Crusade of the Kings because it was organized by the rulers of England, Germany, and France. King Richard I and Saladin signed a truce which ended the Third Crusade.
- Crusaders invaded and attacked Constantinople in 1204. The pope was enraged and the Byzantines never forgave the Catholics. The so-called Children's Crusade happened in 1212; crusaders swept through France and Germany. The crusaders were gradually removed from Jerusalem. Their last crusade state was defeated by Egyptian Muslims in 1291.
