Several girls were chosen to explain why their selected theory of emotion is the best, on stage. They had to convince the audience to vote for them on bestpsychologytheory.com.
“Let’s be honest, the two-factor theory by Schachter and Singer (1962) is the best theory of emotion!”
“Oh? I haven’t heard of this theory before, what does it state?”
The two women "imagine" themselves in the amusement park.
“Okay imagine this: we are in an amusement park, and we are in line for the fastest rollercoaster in the region. What would you feel when we ride it?”
“My heart would be racing rapidly, my hands will be sweating, and I will be trembling nonstop too.”
“Exactly! This process begins with the stimulus, which is followed by the physiological arousal, which is the rapid heartbeat and trembling. After that, we would cognitively label that arousal.”
“I agree! I would reason that my increased heartbeat, sweat, and trembling, are caused by fear of falling off or getting hurt from the roller coaster.”
“Yes, merely feeling arousal is not enough. We must identify the arousal in order to feel the emotion too.”
“Yup! Then I will feel the conscious experience of the emotion which is fear. I will be frightened!”
In summary, Schachter and Singer’s two-factor theory proposed that emotion is based on two factors, a physiological arousal, and a cognitive label. The first thing that happens according to this theory, in response to environmental stimuli, is physiological arousal. The second step is the cognitive label which is immediately followed by the conscious experience of the emotion. The cognitive label is an important step, not physiological arousal only!
“This is why I love this theory. It makes the most sense out of all the other theories of emotion.”
“You know what? I agree, this is the best!”
