- Elizabeth I dies and James I comes to power.
- I am James I and have united England and Scotland.
- James starts to fine Catholics
- Guy Fawkes meets Robert Catesby and the other plotters.
- We must do something!
- Elizabeth died without any children. James, king of Scotland united England and Scotland and therefore became James I. This was the beginning of the United Kingdom.
- They decide to blow up the king with gunpowder.
- When James comes to power, Catholics are hopeful that James will give them more rights and let them keep going to the Catholic church. James however starts to fine Catholics 20 pounds a month if they want to continue going to the Catholic church. The average salary at the time was 2 pounds a year.
- Guy Fawkes is caught on the night of the 4th of November
- Guy Fawkes was one of the people who was being fined. He met up with Robert Catesby, Francis Tresham, Robert Keyes, John Grant, John and Christopher Wright, Thomas Percy, Thomas Bates, Ambrose Rookwood and Sir Everard Digby. They decided that they needed to do something and plot against the government. Francis Tresham was the most reluctant to join and probably let it slip that the plotters were plotting against the king.
- Fawkes is tortured and held in the Tower of London.
- The plotters decide to use gunpowder to blow up the houses of parliament on the opening day, the 5th of November 1605. Guy Fawkes will be the one to light the fuse. The plotters rented a cellar just under the house of Lords. Meanwhile, Lord Mounteagle recieves a mysterious letter telling him about the plot. This was when the plot started to go wrong.

- The guards knew that someone was going to try to blow up the houses of parliament and searched the cellars. They found Fawkes and around 38 barrels of gunpowder, ready to blow up the Houses of Parliament.
- Fawkes was held and tortured in the tower of London until he gave everything away. He was locked away after this, before being hung drawn and quartered in January 1606. This means to hang them, release them before they die, cut them open and take out their organs and burn them and finally cut the person into four. Their parts were sent into villages to warn people about the consequences. All of the plotters were punished like this. They were punished like this as they had committed treason (plot against the king) and heresy (follow a different religion to the king.) These made James angry and so punished them like this.
