  • What kind of person is Stella?
  • What does Stella think about?
  • Who does stella love?
  • Kennedy highlights her mother being a better liar than her, "She had been acting her entire life, which meant that she was the best liar that she knew. Well, second best" (Bennett 300). From this quote, the audience has an understanding of how Stella is viewed in the eyes of Kennedy, as someone who is dishonest and a blatant liar even when the truth comes to light.
  • What actions does Stella take?
  • After a conversation about her family with Loretta, Stella has an internal conflict, "Too many years had passed. What good would looking back do? She was tired of justifying a choice she'd already made. She didn't want to be pulled back into a life that was no longer hers" (Bennett 181). After reading the thoughts that goes on in Stella's mind the reader understands that the thought about her actions continues to corrupt her peace causing her to morally be challenged at the thought of her leaving her family behind and living a lie.
  • What is Stella good at?
  • Stella starts to show an interest in Blake, " Soon she began to look forward to stepping through the glass doors, ambling slowly down the sidewalk with Blake. Soon she noticed how when he blinked, his eyelashes were full like a baby doll" (Bennett 188). Stella begins to grow an affection for Blake in the story, after going on dates with him and experiencing the care that he has for her she begins to observe a lot about the man, the only thing that's in the way is the lie that she is living that allowed her to be in that position in the first place.
  • What effect does Stella have on others?
  • Stella's response when Desiree is conflicted on going back to Mallard, "You wanna go back already? For what? So everyone can laugh at you? Only later, Desiree realized that each time she'd wavered, Stella had known exactly what to say to dissuade her from returning home" (Bennett 57). From never wanting to leave, Stella quickly has a change of feelings and does everything in her power to keep Desiree on board with staying away from Mallard. She enjoys the freedom of being in a new environment and doesn't want that to change.
  • Stella surprisingly tells the truth to her daughter when she is young, " She'd been, for the first and final time, completely honest with her daughter" (Bennett 152). From being successful enough to get to marriage and having a child it is evident that Stella is a good liar and is so good to the point that her past begins to not feel real and aligned with her new identity.
  • Blake highlights the little that he really knows about his wife, "He didn't mind her secrets. He would learn them in good time. But years had passed and she was as inscrutable as ever" (Bennett 190). The lies that Stella has told and lived in has caused her to not be able to be open and vulnerable with her husband causing a disconnect on the intimacy of their relationship, forcing Blake to want to know more about her.
