  • To set up a bunson burner, we place it on a heatproof mat and make sure that the rubber tubing is connected properly to the gas tap. We alson need to make sure that the air hole is turned so that it is on a safteey flame when we turned it on.
  • To light the wooden spill, we sensibly line up at the front of the class and take i t in turns to light our wooden spills via the bunson burner. Then we take the spill and keep one hand in front of it and safely carry it back to our desk.
  • To turn on the gas, we lift the black handle and turn it to the left or right (varies on which you are using).
  • To light the bunson burner with the wooden spill, we put the burning spill over the bunson whilst we light the gas which ignites the flame. After, we put the spill onto the heatproof mat and the flame will go out by itself.
  • To change between the safety and the roaring flame, we turn the regulator collar. I.e when lots of air is let in, it is the roaring flame, whereas when none or little air is let in, it is the safety flame.
  • The difference between a safety and a roaring flame is that a safety flame is 700 degrees, a dirtier and more sootier flame and it is never used for heating. Whereas the roaring flame is 1500 degrees, a much cleaner flame and is always used for heating. We only use safety to turn them on or when we are just standing around the bunsons with no experiments going on. This is because the safety flame is much more visible than the roaring flame.
