History: Romulus and Remus

- At this particular point in time, Romulus and Remus were not alive. Eventually, Rhea Silva [ the vestal virgin ] and Mars [ the God of War ] had twin boys who were named Romulus and Remus. The king at the time [ Amulius ] threw the twins into the Tiber River hoping for them to be killed by drowning. However, Romulus and Remus both survived, rescued by the she-wolf.
- The she-wolf cared for the two boys after finding them both together at the Tiber River, where she was travelling to ‘clench her thirst’. It is said that she treated the twins as her own by feeding and providing them with her own milk. Many would regard the she-wolf as the saviour in this story, for without her, the boys would have not been able to survive.
- There have been many variations of this final event, however, I have chosen the most common version that most remember this ancient myth by. It is said that after the killing of Amulius [ to put their grandfather back on the throne ] the two brothers decided that they would attempt to build a city. However, after constant disagreement, they eventually attempted to build cities of their own. We have many sources that provide us with information on the last moments of Remus’ life, however one seems more realistic than others. We can infer from these two twins’ personalities that both of them are quite fond of themselves. It makes complete and utter sense that what happened next may have very well happened due to their very personality. Legend tells us that Remus mocked Romulus’ wall the protected his city. Out of spite and rage, Romulus killed his brother to show that he was the true king of any city in existence. This also stopped his brother from building a city of his own. Eventually, Romulus went on to build the city of Rome which was an incredibly successful empire in general. This concludes this legendary tale.
