Riley, have you chosen your ethics topic yet? I have been re-reading Amanda Todd’s story again and… I cannot stop thinking about it.
I remember that name. She was the girl who posted the YouTube video with the cue cards, right? It went viral years ago.

Yeah. The video served as her desperate attempt to seek assistance. She described the entire situation about the blackmailer who showed her topless picture and how the harassment continued across multiple schools before she died. She died by suicide.

That’s awful… but what does that have to do with ethics?
A lot, actually. Ethics is about moral principles that govern behaviour, what’s right and wrong. The field of ethics studies both moral standards of good and evil and moral obligations according to Merriam-Webster (2023) . Amanda faced online harassment because people made intentional decisions to harass her. That’s an ethical failure.

People perform activities online which they would never perform when interacting face to face. Maybe they weren’t thinking.

That’s the problem. Being able to hide behind a screen does not mean that you are not morally responsible. According to Kant’s theory of the Metaphysics, “we should treat people as ends, not means”. Amanda was treated like an object, used for someone else’s amusement or power. This is a clear violation of Kantian Ethics. Kant, I. (1785).
Okay, but it’s not just the bullies. What about the people who saw what was happening and didn’t help?
the use of information and communication technologies to support hated behaviour by an individual or group that is intended to harm others is cyberbullying (Belsey, 2005, 18).

Exactly. That’s where Gilligan’s Ethics of Care comes in. According to her theory, “moral decisions should be based on relationships and empathy”. The bystanders, her classmates, maybe even teachers, should’ve shown care and stepped in. Gilligan, C. (1982).
I get that. Some people believe that when information goes online it becomes public domain. Does this not make them somewhat accountable?
That’s victim-blaming and it’s unethical. The people who distributed her photos are the main ones accountable

i guess people failed to act in a way that promotes the greater good by not helping

So you’re saying the whole system failed her friends, adults, strangers online.
Exactly. According to Mill, J. S. (1863), we should act to bring about the greatest happiness. Her suffering could have been reduced if more people acted ethically reporting the abuse, standing by her or even just not sharing the image.
Yes. And it makes me angry and sad. Cyberbullying isn’t just “mean comments.” The abuse of psychological nature constitutes cyberbullying. Amanda attempted to attend school and make friends while pursuing her daily activities yet cruelty pursued her at every turn. And we still see it today.

So what do we do about it? The entire internet cannot be transformed by ethics class.
No, but it’s a start. I want digital ethics to be a real part of school curriculum like a class where we talk about online behavior, not just “don’t share your password.” I also think we need stronger reporting tools on social media and real accountability. Even anonymous users should face consequences.

That makes sense. Honestly, this conversation changed my mind. I never thought about cyberbullying as an ethical issue but now it’s obvious. We can’t just let it slide.
