  • One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Sterling is that blaming others and trying to find a scapegoat can lead to negative consequences. For example, when Goodman's car started on its own, the town tried to blame and falsely accuse him. With the others in such desperation trying to find a scapegoat, they've now falsely accused him, even though if they were being reasonable, they could've worked together and realized he was innocent. Furthermore, later when Charlie was pinpointing suspicion on Steve, it led to an argument and people only became distressed. To illustrate, Steve's wife, Mrs. Brand, was very desperate to defend Steve in his time of need. Steve has indeed done nothing wrong, yet Charlie was being intensely passive-aggressive and pinning the blame on him, leading to useless suspicions, assumptions, and the havoc coming from it. Moreover, when Charlie accidentally murdered Pete Van Horn and got blamed for being the alien, he immediately tried finding a scapegoat, in this case being Tommy, and shifted the blame on him, which led to the town turning on each other. Since Charlie got blame put on him and redirected it to someone else, he's already made the town extremely unruly and rash, with everyone blaming everyone and the town destroying itself from the inside out. To summarize, rashly accusing others and pinning suspicion on them can lead to more problems than there were originally.
