  • "You misunderstand, sir; I cannot pardon these when twelve are already hanged for the same crime. It is not just."
  • "You must pardon them. They will not budge."
  • At the beginning of Act 4, after Herrick is done talking with Tituba and Sarah Good, Danforth asks Herrick where Parris is. They talk about how Hale has been praying and pleading the prisoners to confess to witchcraft, Parris feeling sorrow with the cow ordeal with the farmers and that he too goes to the jail to speak with the convicted prisoners. Parris then comes to the jail and tells the court officials that Abigail and Mercy Lewis have ran off with his money and left by ship out of Salem. Hale enters the room and suggests to the court that the hangings should be postponed to give him more time to get the prisoners to confess. Danforth is convinced that it will make him look weak as they all head to Proctor's cell.

  • "My honesty is broke, Elizabeth; I am no good man. Nothing's spoiled by giving them this lie that were not rotten long before."
  • "And yet you've not confessed till now. That speak goodness in you."
  • In the middle of Act 4, Danforth asks Herrick to go get Elizabeth and bring her to Proctor's cell. Elizabeth arrives and is informed by Hale that Proctor is condemned to hang for being associated with the Devil. Hale tries to convince Elizabeth to try and save her accused husband from being hanged. Danforth questions her lack of emotion and sympathy for her husband's approaching fate and asks her if she going to talk with her husband or not. Elizabeth decides to go talk to Proctor. Elizabeth reunites with Proctor and tells him about their kid's being safe at home, she tells him about Rebecca refusing to confess to witchcraft, and she tells him about Giles Corey's death after being pressed with multiple stones on top of him. Proctor talks to Elizabeth on whether he should confess to witchcraft to save his life and if it will make him a coward. The court officials come back and Proctor decides that he is going to confess.

  • "I have confessed myself! Is there no good penitence but it be public? God does not need my name nailed upon the church! God sees my name; God knows how black my sins are!"
  • "Do you sport with me? You will sign your name or it is no confession, Mister!"
  • At the end of Act 4, Proctor tells the court that he is going to confess to working with the Devil, but to his surprise they write down all his responses so that it can be hanged outside the church for everyone in town to see. Proctor doesn't approve of it and during his confession, Herrick brings Rebecca Nurse to witness it. Danforth begins to question Proctor if he saw anyone else with the Devil. Proctor tells him that he didn't see any of the mentioned names with the Devil. Danforth tells him to sign as proof that Proctor was associated with the Devil, but Proctor refuses to sign the paper as it will ruin his reputation and his name in town. Proctor refuses to give Danforth the signed paper and decides to tear it apart, knowing that he would be hanged for this. Hale and Parris tell Elizabeth to go save Proctor, but she tells them that she doesn't want to take away his dignity and honesty. Soon after, Proctor and Rebecca Nurse are taken out of the jail to be hanged in front of the people of Salem.
