On May 20th, 1521, St. Ignatius of Loyola was struck by a cannonball at the Battle of Pamplona. The Spanish army's spirit crumbled and with it, their chance of victory. Ignatius, gravely wounded, lay in agony on the battlefield. Yet, even in suffering, his courage and compassion resonated with the opposition. Moved by his act, the French forces, once his enemies, carried him to the safety of the Castle of Loyola. There, his profound transformation would begin.

A long recovery led to a sudden shift in perspective. As St. Ignatius lay resting, he had only two books to pass the time: The Life of Christ and The Lives of the Saints. Through these pages, a deeper sense of God’s calling ignited a new mission within the heart of a once battle-hardened soldier. Two books. One transformed life. From that moment, St. Ignatius would begin his ministry, dedicating his life to serve for the greater glory of God."

On May 24th, 1522, St. Ignatius of Loyola laid down his sword before the statue of the Black Madonna at Montserrat, symbolising the end of his life as a soldier and his commitment to serve God. He exchanged his noble attire with a pilgrim’s robe and spent three days in confession to a priest, dedicating himself fully to a new spiritual path. This act marked the beginning of a life lived Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam—for the greater glory of God."
