On 25 February 1916 German forces launch an offensive at Verdun, east of Paris, to "bleed France white" and force the country to the negotiating table.More than 300,000 men are killed altogether, each side losing more or less the same number, and hundreds of thousands more are wounded. Dragging on for more than 300 days, the Battle of Verdun is the longest of the war's Western Front.
The 141-day Battle of the Somme is the bloodiest of the war, with more than a million casualties, including about 400,000 dead or missing. It opens on 1 July 1916 as Allied forces (mainly British) aim to relieve pressure on the French, who are on the rack in Verdun, by attacking the Germans hundreds of kilometers to the northwest, around the Somme river. The five-month battle is the deadliest in Britain's history, with 20,000 dead or missing in just the first hours, and 40,000 wounded.
I declare WAR!!
In January 1917 Germany steps up a campaign of attacking British merchant vessels with U-boat submarines, aiming to throttle the island. It pushes the United States to enter the conflict, angered by the torpedoing of neutral ships in the Atlantic and vessels carrying US citizens. Washington declares war on Germany on 6 April and on 26 June the first US deployment arrives at the French port of Saint-Nazaire.
Triple Entente
Once the war was in full force in Europe, two major alliances were formed; the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente. The Triple Alliance contained Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. The Triple Entente contained Russia, France, and Great Britain
Triple Alliance
It changes the course of the war, forcing a German retreat on all sides, and is planned by French forces commander General Ferdinand Foch. Germany's allies begin to crumble: Bulgaria agrees to an armistice by the end of September, Austria is defeated in late October, and Turkey is ordered to declare a cease-fire a few days later. Germany is in chaos, and on November 9, Kaiser Wilhelm II is forced to abdicate. On November 11, a German delegation meets Foch in a remote forest setting north of Paris and agrees to an armistice.

Armistice
By November 1918, the Allied Powers were triumphant in the war as all Central Powers had surrendered, with Germany being the last to do so. Germany was then forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles, which stated that they had to give up much territory, reduce their army and navy, and pay massive amounts of reparations.
