Bennett says, "She was blueblack, like she’d flown directly from Africa, and everyone in Mallard turned to look at her" (Bennett 40). This quote shows how Jude’s skin tone stands out in Mallard, a town obsessed with lightness. It also reflects the town’s colorist attitudes, where darker skin is viewed with judgment or surprise.

- In the "Vanishing Half" the author shows how Desiree is loyal, caring and family oriented by how she cares for her family and how she still cares for Stella. Bennett says, “Desiree would search for her sister’s face in every crowd, hoping for a reunion that never came”(Bennett 45). This shows how she never stops longing for her twin sister and even searches for her after she disappears. Her emotional loyalty is unwavering, even when Stella abandons her.

- In the "Vanishing Half" one of Stella's actions changes her and her family's life forever, this action is when she passes for white. Bennett says, “She became white and never looked back” (Bennett). This shows how Stella threw away her old life for a new one by passing for white.
