  • While Jude thinks about Stella in her sleep the narrator says,  "For years, Stella perched on a ledge, Stella shrugging, smiling, slipping in and out of doors. Always Stella, never her mother, as if, even asleep, she could tell the difference" (Bennett 210). Jude always thinks about Stella and now that she thinks she has seen her in public she thinks about her even more. These deep thoughts about her leaves her in a daze causing Reese to question her thoughts. This also leads her to go out to search for Stella.
  • When going away to school Jude talks about all the horrible things her peers would call her, "Midnight. Darky. Mudpie. Said, smile, we can't see you..." (Bennett 83). Many people hated Jude due to her skin color. Jude was a beautiful dark skinned girl and people didn't accept her because she was darker than everyone around her. People thought that light skinned was better skinned and due to all the hateful remarks about her skin Jude did whatever she could to change it.
  • While talking to Reese at the party she says, "Maybe it was his accent, southern like hers. Maybe his handsomeness. Maybe because, in a room full of people he'd chosen to talk to her. She took a step towards him, then another and another until she was standing inside his legs" (Bennett 100). Jude is thinking about what attracts her to Reese so much while standing next to him in the party. Reese made Jude feel comfortable in a way nobody else could. He accepted her and that why Juded liked him so much.
  • What does the character think about?
  • While on the bus on the way to California the narrator says, "Jude held the worn paperback in her lap, pressing against the filmy window. She'd never seen a desert before -- it seemed to stretch on forever. Another mile ticked by, carrying her further from her life" (Bennett 83). Jude goes off to school in Los Angeles where she has received a scholarship at UCLA. Her grandmother wanted her to stay and go to college out there but Jude couldn't turn down that opportunity. She gets to get away from Mallard to start her new life.
  • How does the character look?
  • While talking on the phone to her mother about Reese, Jude says, "She thought for a second, about telling her mother Reese's story. Instead she just said, "He keeps me out" (Bennett 126). Jude is afraid her mother will Judge Reese due to the fact that he is a transgender so she keeps her thoughts to herself. She gets the urge to tell her mother about him but something is stopping her from doing so.
  • What/ Who does the character like?
  • While talking to Reese about why she went to get a new job Jude says, "I couldn't tell him the real reason; he didn't even like her to pay for dinner, always reaching for his wallet as soon as the check came. He would never agree to let her pay for an expensive surgery..." (Bennett 130). Jude takes the actions to go out and get a job because she cares about Reese and she wants him to be the happiest version of himself. Jude is too afraid to tell Reese the real reason as to why she went out to find a job.
