- South African black people and eventually many people around the world became aware of Mandela's fight. As a result many people protested to get him set free. Until finally after 27 years he was set free on Feb. 11, 1990.
- Shortly after his release, Nelson Mandela was chosen deputy president of the ANC. He became president of the party in July 1991. Mandela led the ANC in negotiations with de Klerk to end Apartheid and bring about a peaceful transition to nonracial democracy in South Africa.
