All right!
Jenny has 20 red beads and 14 blue beads. How many beads does she have total?
Today we are going to work in our collaborative groups to answer this inquiry question.
Woo-hoo!
Please work on solving it alone first
I know this!
Jenny has 20 red beads and 14 blue beads. How many beads does she have total?
Hmmm. It says "total" I should add.
Magnificent Mathematicians!
I'm having this group present first, then group 5.
What have you tried?
First I decomposed then added.
We've got to make sure we all know what's on our poster.
How did you solve it, Karla?
That's a good idea!

I agree, because total is a clue word for addition.
Do we agree, or disagree and why?
Johnny, what did Kenny write?
He added 20+14 because it said total in the question.
Jenny has 20 red beads and 14 blue beads. How many beads does she have total?
I agree too because total means the same as altogether.
They solved the problem by using a number line, but the answer was the same.
How was this strategy of decomposing the same or different as the previous strategy?
Jenny has 20 red beads and 14 blue beads. How many beads does she have total?
That tells us that it doesn't matter how we solve, as long as what we do makes sense.
We decomposed the 14 into 10 and 4 to add more easily.
We can use an open number line and count on.
I am very proud of all your hard work today. Before we go to recess, turn to your partner and explain to him/her the answer to our focus question.
Jenny has 20 red beads and 14 blue beads. How many beads does she have total?
We can decompose to make a ten first...
How can we add 2 2-digit numbers?
Yes, and we can also add by using place value...
