  • Good Morning ma'am!!
  • Conversation in the Chemistry lab
  • Uhhhhh!!!But at least we get to do something in the lab.
  • So student's today we aren't going to do anything in the lab today, instead we are going to discuss about the 'Classification of Matter' with real life examples.
  • Good morning all!!
  • 2 Types of classifications of Matter
  • 1)Pure substances are substances that are made up of only one kind of particles and has a fixed or constant structure. Ex-diamond, water, pure sugar2)Mixtures:-A mixture is a material made up of two or more different substances which are not bonded. Ex- Water and Dirt= Mud
  • Ma'am could I tell about pure substances and Mixtures
  • Students did you know that matter is classified into 2 categories, which are Pure substances and Mixtures. These are furthered classified.
  • Absolutely right,Pratyush.
  • Sure, Pratyush
  • About the Further Division of Pure Substances
  • Now, as we know that what a pure substance and a mixture is , let's first discuss about Pure substances.
  • Pure substances are classified into  2 more forms which are:-1)Elements2)Compounds
  • Compound is a substance composed of many identical molecules composed of atoms from more than one element held together by chemical bonds. A molecule consisting of atoms of only one element is therefore not a compound. Compounds can be broken down if needed. Ex-Water - Formula: H2O = Hydrogen2 + Oxygen.
  • Elements is a pure substance consisting only of atoms that all have the same numbers of protons in their nuclei. Unlike compounds, elements cannot be broken down into simpler substances by any chemical reaction.Ex- Hydrogen, Helium
  • Students from class 9E, visited the chemistry lab on 4th May 2022. Mamta Ma'am was their chemistry teacher and told them that they will only talk and discuss about "Classification of Matter" .This made the student's upset but still thought that they at least visit the lab.
  • Depth of Pure Substances
  • Did you all know that elements are furthered divided into 3 parts :-1)Metals2)Non-Metals 3)Metalloids
  • Mamta Ma'am started the discussion by dividing matter into two types Pure substance and Mixture. Pratyush a boy from 9E decided to add on to the discussion.
  • About the Further Division of Mixtures
  • Now, let's talk about Mixtures. Mixtures are classified into 2 types:-1)Homogeneous2)Heterogeneous
  • Mamta ma'am started by discussing about Pure substances and told about their classification into Elements and Compounds.
  • Depth of Mixtures
  • Homogeneous mixtures are furthered classified into True Solutions:- A true solution is a homogeneous mixture of solute and solvent. Ex- Salt Solution, Sugar and water Solution, etc.
  • Mamta ma'am then told the students about the further division of Elements.
  •    1)Metals is a material that,  shows a lustrous appearance, and conducts electricity and heat relatively well. Metals are typically malleable or ductile. Ex-Iron, Copper2)Non-Metal is a element that generally lacks a predominance of metallic properties; they range from colorless gases to shiny and high melting temperature solids. Ex-Wood3)Metalloids is an element  whose properties are intermediate between those of metals and solid non-metals or semiconductors. Ex- Silicon
  • Next, Mamta ma'am shifted from Pure substances to the discussion of Mixtures and their Classification.
  • 1)Homogeneous is a mixture, in which the composition is uniform throughout the mixtureEx- Salt and Water2)Heterogeneous is a mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout the mixture.Ex:-Sand and Water
  • Before the period ends, Mamta ma'am wanted to end the discussion, so she started discussing about how heterogeneous and homogeneous are furthered classified. She soon concludes her discussion and happy to do it in the lab and show the kids examples related to the discussion. She also said we can use this Information today in our daily life as once in a while we surely come across these details we can inform other people with this information and also learn something new. Like drinking juice.
  • Heterogeneous mixtures are further classified into 2 parts which are:-1)Colloids:- A colloid appears to be homogeneous but actually it is a heterogeneous mixture of solute and solvent. Ex-Milk ,Blood.2)Suspension:- A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture of a solid dispersed in a liquid or a gas. Ex- Milk of Magnesia, Muddy water.
