In act 1 scene 3 Troy's son Corey approaches him about buying a TV trying to connect and frow a bond with his father. this conversation turns into an argument over money in which troy makes it known that he dose not want Corey to pursue football because he doesn't want him to be discriminated against like he was when he played baseball. Troy also talks about how he doesn't necessarily like Corey, his whole job as his father is to provide.

Still in scene one Troys son Lyons who is a struggling musician comes by to ask to borrow 10 dollars. Rose makes him hand over the money after Lyons guilts Troy by bringing up the fact that he left him at a young age

Act 1 Scene 4 start out with good news that Troy can drive for the garbage truck now. Corey storms home after Troy told his coach that Cory cant play football, this leads to a very heated argument. Troy then goes into his family life as a young adult and how his father was an awful man. Troy ran away from home in which he was poor and homeless and stole to provide for his family. Troy then talks about how he spent 15 years in jail for killing a man and all he wants is for Corey to not make the same mistakes. Trou refers to Corey not working at the AP as strike one.
