Storyboard Text

  • Thank you so much for coming in today for this parent-teacher conference, Ms. W.I want to start by saying that I've really enjoyed having CW in class. He is generous and friendly with his friends. However, I have noticed that his math scores have started to dip and on the latest assessment, he scored below average.I want to help CW understand math better and improve his scores. So, I'm thankful we can talk about it, because you are the expert on CW.In your experience, has CW usually struggled with math? Has he told you what he doesn't like or understand with it?
  • Well first off thank you for all of the emails and weekly reports on CW's progress. It's been a great help to know how CW has been doing.I've also noticed his math scores going down. Unfortunately, CW has always struggled with math. He's always said, Math isn't fun., I don't get it., It's too hard., It's boring.. My husband is always traveling for work and I have tried to help him with it at home, however I don't get much opportunity as I should to help him as I need to take care of his two younger siblings. What do you think we should do?
  • He is a great team player and leader within the advisory, which displays his leadership qualities which arereally important in the present day and age. I've also noticed that CW work ethic starts to go down when it's time for math. Perhaps he's not engaged with the material. What interests him? What his favorite activity to do at home?
  • Well he loves his computer games. He'll spend hours playing that. It often gets in the way of chores and homework.
  • I totally understand that. It can be hard to pull yourself away from a computer game. However, we may be able to use his love for computer games as an avenue to improve his math scores.
  • Really? How?
  • Based on what you've told me, it may be that the best way to pique CW's interest in math is through games. So, I will start adding math games and real-world math activities so students can practice applying what they've learned in that lesson. Do you think that would work for CW?
  • It sounds like a great idea! Is there anything my husband and I can do to help CW at home?
  • Agreed. Thank you.
  • There are math learning games on the internet, like www.ixl.xom. How would you feel about having him play those type of games for 30 minutes a night?
  • If it helps improve his scores, I'm up for trying it!
  • Excellent! Please let me know how is progress is coming along at home and I'll do the same for at school. My goal for CW is to see his math scores improve to a passing grade by the end of the next unit.
