- At the beginning of the world, the animals used to work for Man and there was a camel who used to lie in the middle of a Howling Desert because he didn't want to work. He used to eat sticks, thorns, and prickles. whenever anybody spoke to him he just said "Humph!" and nothing else.
- The horse came to him on Monday
- Humph!
- Camel, O Camel, come out and trot like the rest of us
- The horse went away and told the man.The dog came with a stick in his mouth.
- Humph!
- Camel, O Camel, come and fetch and carry like the rest of us.
- The Dog went and told the Man. The Ox came to him.
- Humph!
- Camel, O Camel, come and plough like the rest of us
- The Ox went away and told the man. At the end of the day the Man called the Horse, the Dog and the Ox together.
- Three, O Three, I'm very sorry for you; but that Humph-thing in the desert can't work or her would have been here by now, so I am going to leave him aline and you must work double- time to make up for it.
- The Three were very angry and they held a panchayat on the edge of the desert and the Camel came chewing cud and laughed at them.
