- I am Frederick Douglass and I am a slave. I work on a slave plantation. My mom had to leave when I was younger, and I never knew who my dad was.
- My mom worked from sunup to sundown, at a plantation far away from mine. She would sometimes visit the plantation I was on,at night,but she died a little later.Since we never saw each other much, I never really got to know her.
- I don't know about that.....

- Here ya go Frederick. This root'll keep ya safe from Covey's beatings.
- As I got older I was expected to work more. Many slaves got whipped, and were treated like animals. But one day, my master said, "You will be rented out to Coveys farm to get your spirit broken.".
- I got whipped a lot too. I was just another animal in their herd and I had had enough. One day I ran into the woods, wounded and feverish. There i met a slave named Sandy. I told him about how my master whipped us, how the whip carried the blood and tears from the slaves broken souls.
- Sandy helped my wounds from the whip heal and gave me shelter for the night. In the morning he gave me a magic root that he said would protect me from being whipped. Then I headed back to the plantation.
