Compulsory voting become a thing in Australia in the 1915 when it was introduced to Queensland by the Liberal party but due to forcing all Australian to vote it led to an increase in more "donkey votes" or informal votes.

What is Compulsory voting?
Compulsory voting is when all eligible Australians (18+) are forced to vote if they DO NOT vote will be issued with a fine costing around $222 or around $100 for local elections. What do you do if you don't want to vote but have to? Well lucky for you there are things such as donkey votes. Donkey votes are when you number your vote in the same order of the candidates in the order placed on you ballot paper top being 1 and bottom being the number of candidates running for that election
