  • hey Charmaine! about our Science Class, atoms are really interesting to study isn’t?
  •  I know right! here’s some additional info, did u know that An atom is the basic building block of chemistry? It is the smallest unit into which matter can be divided without the release of electrically charged particles. Cool right?
  •  Really? wow that’s interesting. I also know that it also is the smallest unit of matter that has the characteristic properties of a chemical element.
  • Yes! And also about atom’s history, The history of the atom begins around 450 B.C. with a Greek philosopher named Democritus. Democritus wondered what would happen if you cut a piece of matter, such as an apple, into smaller and smaller pieces.
  • Wait i know that one! He thought that a point would be reached where matter could not be cut into still smaller pieces. He called these "uncuttable" pieces atomos. This is where the modern term atom comes from. Right?
  • Right!
  • Also about Democritus, Democritus was an important philosopher. However, he was less influential than the Greek philosopher Aristotle. Aristotle rejected Democritus’s idea of atoms. In fact, Aristotle thought the idea of atoms was ridiculous.
  • Yes, Democritus was a great philosopher but unfortunately, Aristotle’s ideas were accepted for more than 2000 years. During that time, Democritus’s ideas were more or less forgotten.
  • Around 1800, a British chemist named John Dalton revived Democritus’s early ideas about the atom. From his research, Dalton developed a theory of the atom. Dalton’s theory was soon widely accepted. Most of it is still accepted today.
  • Wow, a lot of information about the history of atoms can truly amaze us.
  • Agreed! we must study more about this fun lesson! Anyways, goodbye see you on the next class!
  • See you too Princess!
